Somehow all of my Microsoft Word files were converted to wordpad files. I'm wondering how to set Microsoft Word to the default program.

It may be that your computer settings have changed, and will open Word files (ending with .doc) with Wordpad. Go into Control Panel and open Folder Options. Click the File Types tab, and look for .DOC under Extensions. If it shows WordPad under File Types, click to highlight, click Change, then select Microsoft Word. That should do it.

Are these .rft (Rich-Text-Format) files? If so, then wordpad is the default program that opens them if you don't have Word installed.

Now, for some odd reason it defaults to Wordpad and you do have Word install. Then do this.

1. Go to one of the files, right click it, then choose Properties.
2. You see a button that says Change, click on that and select Word as your default application, and click OK.

Go to Windows Explorer. click Tools, Folder Options. Click on the File Types tab and scroll down to DOC. Click Advanced, remove the existing WordPad associations. If Word isn't listed there, click New and enter word: give it a name like "MS Word" and browse for the appropriate file, probably C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\winword.exe

one way is to right-click on one of the files and choose "open with" and then pick "choose program...", click on Microsoft Word and then make sure you check the box at the bottom that says to always use selected program to open these type of files. Then click OK. That should default it to Word.

dinosf answer is the right one if you are using xp. on some older operating system like windows 98 you have to single click the file and hold down the shift key and right mouse click to get the open with dialog.

At some point you told your comp to always associate this type of file with a particular program now you must tell it to do the same but with the program that you want to use

Open windows explorer and go to the Tools menu and select folder options. once that dialog has opened click the "File Types" tab. Scroll down until you see the ".DOC" extension on the left. Left click it once. Now, down below you will see "Details for 'DOC' extension. Click Change and select Microsoft Word as the default program. Your done!

Open a file folder (doesn't matter which one). Click on Tools - Folder Options - File Types tab. Scroll down until you find the "DOC" type and change the default program on it to Word. Then OK out and close the folder.

you don't need a converter, you just need to set the default program for .doc files to use MS Word.

Try this:
To change the program that opens a file
Open My Documents.
If the file you want is not located in My Documents or its subfolders, use Search to find it. To open Search, click Start, and then click Search.

Right-click the file you want to open in a different program, and then click Properties.
On the General tab, click Change.
Click the name of the program in which you want the file to open.

in Windows explorer (or on a file on your desktop) right click the file, choose open with, select word and check the box to always use the program to open the file.
