Lithium Ion is better! but it has a life cycle! like 1000 charge life cycles! Thats why Ipods break and loose battery quicker when it gets old! Same as NiMH but that lasts longer till it breaks down!
But this new technology is called Lithium Polymer! It has an amazing battery life!! Most Sony cell phones use this- 2004 till now! dont bother looking for an old sony with Li-Poly!! The stand by and user talk time has doubled because of this new stuff!!

Depends on the application. If the device produces a steady drain on the battery (like a camcorder), then lithium works best for this.
If the device requires spurts of energy (like a still camera) then NiMH will be better.

Assuming you mean Li-Ion rechargable and not Lithium primary (i.e. non rechargable)?
Li-Ion is not fundamentally more expensive than Ni-MH. But the camera manufacturers will price gouge you for a replacement. You can find excellent deals online for off-brand replacements.
On the other hand, an AA is an AA & the Eveready Ni-MH AA battery is excellent.
The most important difference to most camera users is that Li-Ion is light weight and the usual slim flat packs are also very space efficient. So Li-Ion is the only way to go for light-weight compact point-and-shoot cameras.
But if you want a camera that is big anyway (a Pro SLR) I'd go with the AA option and pack several Ni-MH batts. and one set of Lithium (not Li-Ion) AA's for back-up.
Finally, a fully charged Ni-MH will hold a charge for about 1 month, and a Li-Ion will hold a charge for 2 or maybe 3 months.

Lithium is probably better, but can be very expensive to replace...but NiMH is also great...just get the highest capacity ones and you will have no problems.
