Contrary to popular belief, a larger dog usually makes a better inside dog as they are calmer in temperment. My best inside dog - a newfoundland! Smaller dogs may not take up as much space, but they need room to run as they have more energy than larger dogs. Another suggestion, check out a shelter or rescue group for a dog that has already been through the puppy process, and will be more content being indoors. If you can find a rescue group where members foster the dogs, they can immediatly tell you if this would be a good situation for the dog as well as for you. So it's not really a size ro kind of dog you want to look for, it's the individual temperment and personality you want to take time to discover before you bring it home.

The ideal dog would be one that's small to medium and doesn't shed or bark too much. Is good to have a dog that would bark at the doorbell or strangers, though, because it would let you know if someone is trying to break in or snooping around in your yard.
There are many breed that match that criteria, you can probably do some research online of the breeds that you like and find out if they are a good match. I like chihuahuas, but not the tiny ones. Yorkies are also good indoor companions but they get spoiled easily and are a bit pricey. Pomeranians bark too much.

Actually any dog can be a good inside dog if you train them properly, but usually inside dogs are considered to be the smaller dogs like Shih Tzu, Yorkshire terriers, Lasa Apso, Poodles, Dachshunds, Chihuahuas, etc

The indoor dog to get may surprise you. I recommend a greyhound. Even though these famed racing dogs are lights out fast and blindly chase rapidly moving objects, they sadly have generally been horribly treated as racers. As such, any space larger than a dog crate is very appreciated, in addition they can pretty much be couch potatoes and are remarkably affectionate to owners who are willing to treat them nicely. I know the rescue groups are always looking for good adoption people and they do a very good job matching animals with owners.

Any dog would make a good inside dog. No dog should have to live outside seperated from it's family. They are pack animals. There are a lot of good dogs up for adoption on http://www.petfinder.com

A yorkshire terrier is a wonderful indoor pet. They are extremely loving, smart and obedient. Their small size is perfect for a home or appartment; just running and playing indoors seems to be enough exercise for him. Mine was easily "paper trained" and is not a picky eater.

A pug makes a great inside dog. They love people and they don't need alot of exercise. On the downside, they snore like truckers, and shed like ..... well they shed alot ;o)
