I need to know what dances are done at a wedding reception. What order do they generally go in? Any new ideas? I am open for suggestions.

I don't know for sure and I don't know the order, but most of the ones I've seen, usually people do a classical ballroom dance.

It's funny that I found this question though, b/c I was just talking to my boyfriend about how people have different themes at their wedding and some take dance classes to entertain people at their reception. I told him we should take classes and be different and outrageous and perform a sexy salsa or something like that at ours. I think that would be neat.

As far as the wedding party goes, there is usually the bride and groom dance, then the father/daughter dance, mother/son dance and the entire wedding party dance. You pick the songs for each of these dances. Other than that, they can play throughout the night, the electric slide, the cha cha slide, the chicken dance, hokie pokie, call me sweetheart dance, the party train, the twist. That is some of the more popular ones.

Here's how it should go:

1. Bride & Groom Dance immediatly while entering the reception.
2. Bride & Father after dinner.
3. Groom & Mother after Bride & Father.
4. Anyone else after that.

Traditionally a waltz is done, but anything would work.

At my wedding we did:

1. Brother and Sister
2. Mother-in-law with groom
3. Bridal Party with bride and groom (we did Friends in Low places in a circle)
4. Money Dance
5. Chicken Dance (with chicken masks)
6. Cha Cha Slide
7. Electric Slide
8. Cotten Eye Joe

we did groom/bride, father/daughter, son/mother, then bridal party. at the end of the bridal party, everyone in the bridal party went out into the crowd and grabbed one person, then a few minutes later, everyone went and grabbed someone else. it's a great way to break the ice and get everyone dancing. Pick a song everyone likes to (We did ol' time rock n'roll) because we knew everyone would like it.

Another dance we did that everyone liked is the couples dance. You ask every married couple to come out on the dance floor, then through out the song you have the DJ annouce"Everyone married less than 5 years please sit down." Do this until you have one couple left, then you dance with that couple as a "Good Luck" to your marriage. We did this and it ended up being my husband's grandparents. It was really nice and everyone cried watching us dance with them. They were married 52 years. His grandfather has died since, and it's nice to watch the video and see the dance, now it's extra special.

Best of luck to you, and have fun!!

Don't make it too long. Your guests really don't care about other people dancing, they want to dance. More popular these days is:

Bride & Groom (right when you enter to get things moving)
Possibly Bridal party, but only if it's not horribly awkward
Father/Daughter (Maybe son and mom)

Then everyone PARTY DOWN!!!

Honestly, I only think people enjoy watching the bride and groom dance their first dance. After that, does anyone really care? Doubtful.

You mean like the bride dancing with her father, or like the Chicken Dance?

i've heard that if you play the chicken dance at your wedding reception the marriage will last forever.
