Absolutely. The thing most people don't seem to realize is that there are things that go on within the spiritual world that are much more real and involved than the world we see around us. I have known several people who have seen things like what you are talking about. One of my best friends grew up as a missionary kid in the Ivory Coast. The people of one of the nearby tribes had this tradition called the Speaking of the Dead in which the men of the tribe would hoist a newly deceased person over their heads and ask it questions and depending on which way the body would cause the men to lean, they would have their answer. It was sort of like the "ouija board" concept. One of the missionaries was standing about 20 feet away watching this take place and when they asked the body a question the body literally lunged out at the missionary and then fell to the ground a little bit short of where he was standing. There are demons out there. Satan is very real and whatever was possessing that body did at all like what was possessing the missionary, which was the Holy Spirit. The demons in this world know they are defeated and therefore hate Christians. Christians, because of the blood of Jesus Christ have power and authority over these spirits that are all around us. Believe me... it IS real.
Whenever people talk about ghost stories... things they've seen or heard... I have no doubt in my mind at all that what people see is real. Theyr'e not ghosts, however. They are simply demons who are trying to stir up as much confusion regarding the "afterlife" as possible. The more confused people are about what is possible to happen to them after death, the less likely they are to make a decision.
I have also known someone who cast a demon out of someone else. My high school algebra teacher, a very wise and Godly man, had a troubled sister about ten years ago that became possessed by a demon. He rebuked that demon in the name of Jesus Christ and it fled from her. There is power in the name of Christ. Trust me. I've seen it.

Yes demons are real. Being an occultist I get the luxury to deal with them constantly. They are rather resourceful and not particularly nice about the opinions of others.

Do they possess people? Yes again, they are capable of possessing people. It is often people who know nothing of magick thinking they can perform a ritual and attempting to do so. Also people who play with ouiji boards and other occult tools. Sadly it is my burden to deal with such people being an occultist that actually knows what he is doing.

Are we using them as an excuse? Yes we are though not as often anymore. Surprisingly there was a turn of events that lead people to believe that not everyone who claimed they were possessed actually were possessed. That was back in the 1800's. Sure a few religious people still use the I am possessed excuse. Sure a few others actually get possessed.

If you do not mess with magickal tools like tarot cards and ouiji boards then you are not likely to be possessed. If you do not perform any magickal rituals or mess with any tools or mediums then you are bulletproof from possession.

Demons are often the scapegoat for inappropriate or unconventional behavior. Just as some believers give credit to a god for what they believe is good they pass off what they perceive to be evil as the work of an external force. This is a very effective formula for population control. If each human took responsibility for what is the world might operate in a more tolerable fashion for many however everything is as it should be right here right now

I watched a thing on exorcisms, it's sad. They're just having psychotic episodes, that's all it is. The mind is very open to the power of suggestion.

yes they´re real
yep they can get into a vulnerable soul
but we can understand the physiological process that goes inside the brain, the rush of chemical when angry or depress...yet somehow even when we can understand the big process is in the detail that causes them where truly evil lies (a difference of a heartbeat can make a man shoot his wife when she founds her cheating on him, or make a bugler kill a victim out of fear, yet somehow this are dysfunction , and so what causes the malfunction in the brain stimulation?)...
anyway evil is there and so is devil,if you want something more complex like an exorcist case good luck in finding one since possession is very rare as accepted by the church.
Devils greatest plot is making humans believe he doesn´t exist

Yes, demons are real. I haven't had any negative experiences with them, and yes, they are a scapegoat...Ever hear someone say the Devil made me do it, as an example?
