I have a tiny spare bedroom. Depends what you need to use it as (privacy wise) as I've taken the door off to allow for space behind where the door would normally open up, and have but a bamboo curtain up.
Have fitted a chest of drawers and free standing shelves on one side, and desk with pc under the window. For overnight guests, I bought a 'chair bed' from Argos, Ikea do a similair single futon bed and if they need a bit of privacy, there's a screen (3 parts that fold together) to put across the doorway.
Putting shelves on the wall would make the room feel cramped, and knocking through to make 1 room may affect the re-sale of your property as 2 bedrooms always sounds better.

I don't know any sites, but have some advice...
Start with colour. If you like colour around you, don't be afraid of it just because it is a small room. If you use a monochromatic look it will fool the eye into thinking the room is bigger than it is.
As far as furniture goes more is less, so make the pieces you put in multi purpose. Daybeds are good for this, you have a couch in the day and bed at night. Any twin size bed with storage under it, can also be a good storage solution. A side table makes a good all round table. Dresser in the closet, if it fits.If not it can be a TV stand, art showplace, or a great place for an aquarium.
Also don't be afraid to go up.... on the wall I mean. Shelves painted the wall colour make great extra room and yet blend in so as not to break the eyes illusion of space.

PAINTING/COLORS: use lighter colors... the darker/brighter the color the less depth to the room visually... avoid patterned walls and wall paper - make sure there's lots of light in the room - hanging lamp fixture would be a good idea to reduce taking up floor space - Earth tones have seemed to be the best space creators in my house
FURNITURE: Daybeds are the way to go! You can keep it folded as a couch which gives your room a considerable amount of space and it can still manage to look trendy/clean/contemporary (really whatever look you are going for) while providing a whole new definition to your room
ACCESSORIES: Avoid clutter at all costs! The more knick-knack items you have the more cramped you feel in your space - if you do have a lot of room accessories try getting a corner shelving unit - Mirrors are amazing decorative pieces that add depth to your room as well! A plant, real or fake, or even just a potted flower adds life to your room without taking up a lot of space...
Other helpful hints.... go to Target! They have TONS of fun goodies for redecorating at great prices - and if you look online they have room ideas as well... you could also check potterybarn

Its cramped but it gets everything in. The idea is to spread things around, and dont be afraid to go upwards aswell as horizontally, put shelevs above each other etc

If you hunt through the remaindered bookstores you'll find books about storage solutions, the Works is online now.

You can get cabin style beds for adults as well as kids, so underneath the bed becomes a bit of a treasure hunt.
It depends if the room is for an adult or child, or spare room.

If you have a closet or wardrobe use two rods instead of one. You can hang twice as many clothes. Use lots of shelves, decorative shelves, or plain shelves and boxes. Think about storage and go up and/or under.

Monochromatic colors, built-ins, wall lamps, good natural light. no scatter rugs or clutter/knick-knacks. Less equals visually more space.
