I have gotten my tickets thru Travelocity, and its always been teh cheapest ive found on the net. You can check out Kayak.com.
Since you live in LA and your friend in NY, try looking into being a carrier for a company. Thats when a company asks you to take something to that city. its cheaper for them b/c they dont have to pay for shipping and have it wait in customs. Its not always when you want to go so if your flexiable on times and dates, that would be a good cheap way. Plus you can only have one less item to take as that replaces luggage.
Or if you're really brave, priceline.com... you can enter your own price, but you may not get the times you want, so again, if you're flexiable.
