Are you looking for a hard drive camera, or just one to transfer video to your computer hard drive. If you are looking for the later, you can find a very good MiniDV camera for $250-300. It records to a very small digital tape, so it has excellent quality and is very compact. You can connect it to your computer with USB or firewire. If you do want a hard drive camera, that will cost more, and you can't just put in a new tape to record more.

JVC DV camcorders are very good, at that price range, you'll do good.

You'll need a firewire cable, a place to plug the firewire cable into. You'll need software to "Capture" the movie from the camera and convert it into files for DVD movie burning.

Depending on what you spend, the camera may include all of those accessories.

Since you said 'future', prices might drop to your budget because the sony dcr-sr and the jvc-everio is above 500usd. Both are really good products, and it's up to you to choose.
My miniDV cam is now 6yrs old, Wish it drops really soon so i could get one too!
