sorry ken*! you caught us....the entire country has conspired to drive you crazy!

just kidding...i guess we've just gotten into the habit of using that phrase as a society...we could start to change it and use the english terminology of "ring up" :o)

And the funny thing about it is that we still refer to regular internet service with a modem as "dial-up" even though the computer does not dial. It electronically generates touch tones.

We still say that for the same reason why we refer to things like a ringing phone or "ring tones" when a phone has not had a bell inside of it for the better part of 15 years. Phones now have electronic buzzers or audio speakers.

Speaking of dials, we even say that about TV's and radios- "Don't touch that dial!" warns your favorite TV show even though there is an electronic tuner with onscreen display. I don't even think that there are any TV sets that have a number display on the front of it.

Gloves in a glove compartment? Don't be ridiculous, that's where the shoes go, but my cars brake shoes must be gone because they are not there. Why do we park in a driveway and drive on a parkway? Why do we use the phrase "dial me up" or "call me up" when we always stay on the ground. Why am I thinking of answering this question when all the answers given are great !

Just habit. Just like why do people still refer to a music artists work as an album? Vinyl record albums have been gone for a very long time!

Because even with a touchtone keypad, you are still performing the act of 'dialing' the number.

You learn something one way and it stays with you ...and you pass it on. My parents had me saying "ice box" and "tin-foil" even though aluminum foil and refrigerators had taken their place. How many people really have gloves in their glove compartment?

It does seem harder to say, "I'll push the number".
