Depending on your dogs size put some olive oil in his/her kibble. I have big dogs and use about a table spoon of olive oil to their food. It helps alot.

Our dog has a tendency to get dry, itchy & flaky skin and all of the people above have suggested things and I've literally tried them all... but the best, easiest and safest thing to use if Omega 3 Fatty Acid Oils found in Brewers Yeast. The bottle is tagged as Brewers Yeast.
Of all places, I found these pills at WalMart in the pet section for like $4 and they are WONDERFUL. You give the dog one pill per 10 pounds and they are flavored so resemble a treat.
Try it... your pup will thank you! ;)

I found out that there is a special kind of med that you can get from the vet. Its expensive the first month, but then it drops drastically the next. This med is for those year round dogs who have allergies all the time. its called Atopica. I just bought some for my dog. It could also be a diet thing. Some dogs are allergic to lamb and wheat. It causes skin irritation.

You should probably bath your dog less, more then once a week will strip his skin and could cause dry skin.
His problem may be caused by a nutritional deficiency. Try feeding him Fish Oil capsels a couple a couple times a day often help.
Its possible that it is allergies, in which case you need to determine what he is allergic to, but benydrl and flea medication could help, but for allergies talk to your vet. Food allergies are also a possibiliity, common allergins for dogs include corn, wheat, and chicken. You may want to try switching foods to a lamb or venision and rice or potate food. Make sure it has no corn or "byproducts."
Good luck!

If you are bathing him more than every month, you are drying out his skin.
Check the dog food label. The first ingredient should be meat. Dogs need a good died to have healthy skin and fur. Also look at the fat level in the food. I have a high fat content in my dog food. It is 20% fat.

If you wash your dog too often, it makes your dogs undercoat dry out which causes flaky skin. Avoid washing your dog to much... Use babywipes to clean weekly, but this will still allow your dog's body to produce natural, good oils.

The best stuff I have ever used was Emu shampoo - they sell it at the pet store and it works great. I have a Pom and had the same trouble as you and his Groomer suggested this to me and I absolutely love it. Anything with Emu oil in it is good too.
