identical twins have to be identical in every way, even their sex. If their sex is not the same, they are called ferternal twins.

Identical twins must be boyboy or girl girl. Identical twins develop from the same sperm and egg where as fraternal twins are 2 separate sperms and eggs. Fraternal twins can be girl/boy,girl/girl,or boy/boy. I have twin grandsons who are fraternal and look nothing alike.

I have seen some TV shows that talked about girl/boy identical twins. The following web site has an article on it.

there has been about four very rare cases of opposite sex identical twins due to genetic abnormality (Agnew, Klein & Robert, 19)
Hope this helps

Identical sets of twins happen when one egg is fertilized and then it splits into 2 embryos. They are always the same sex.
