The dog is 3 years old, potty trained and my aunt has to get rid of it because she is moving to somewhere you can't have a dog. It's a schnoodle and those are small, my boyfriend says if we ever were to get a dog it would be a larger one.

"baby sit" the dog for a few days, so the boyfriend can hopefully get attached to him. during this period, schedule activities, e.g., park, beach, etc., where all of you can spend time together -- greater chance of bonding through shared experiences.

if they don't bond, make sure that your aunt either finds a good home for the dog, or finds a reputable rescue group that will find him a good home. there are many rescue groups out there, which can be located via the web, newspaper, etc. there is no need for her having to resort to dropping the dog off at an animal "shelter"/pound.

Ask him if he'd agree to a trial run. Take the dog for a weekend and don't pressure him, but ask him to go on a walk with you and the dog and play catch, etc. with the dog. Have treats handy and give your boyfriend 2-3 before the dog comes over. If he still doesn't want the dog, at least you tried. If he agrees, promise him that he gets to pick the next dog and discuss breeds that he likes. Having two dogs (eventually) can work out quite well if one is a bit older and is willing to teach the puppy (even a large breed puppy can be taught by a smaller, older dog.)

How about you get the schnoodle and he gets a kind of dog he likes. You can have wonderful times together including your dogs.

Getting a large dog is a macho thing...the bigger the dog, the more macho he feels. Play on his emotions. Bring the dog over for a few days. Make he fall in love with the dog. And, as a last resort, deny him "whoopee" until he lets you get your dog.

Having a dog in a condo isn't really fair to them. Dogs need more room than a condo can offer.

first of all your boyfriend sounds like a jackass. He is just not letting you get the dog because its not the one he wants. I bet if you were to give in to him and get a larger dog instead he wouldn't even take care of it and leave all the responsibilty to you anyways. Tell him this...

say if we get the dog i'll take care of it, but if we wait and get a big one its your responisbilty...training, vet visits and bills.

and if you still get a "no" dump his ***, I would!! Dogs are way better than men, trust me.

Give up the idea or get your own place so you can have the dog there.
