an atheist would think about this rationally and this is what he/she would see:

- Israel has been beating up on Palestine for years, even during the "peaceful" years. The abduction of the Israeli soldiers were just a retaliation by the Palestinians for all the beatings they've been taking (and not from "just nothing" as the media says).
- Hamas are an extremeist terrorist organization and it was wrong for them to abduct the soldiers; however, the Palestinian govt is weak in itself and the Palestinian people turn to the Hamas for help and protection; Hamas had a right to retailate the way they did but now that they've made their point, they should return the soldiers
- Hezbollah has no right to enter into the fracas. The fact that they have only shows that they have support from other, more powerful organizations. It's not Lebanon, because they are powerful enough to "revamp" and take matters into their own hands without the Lebanese govt (who are democratic) having a say. Syria/Iran, maybe??

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION:

- Israel has a right to protect themselves from extreme terrorist organizations, including Hamas and Hezbollah; however, they are implementing a lopsided offensive (using their air force* and naval prowress to cripple an organization only armed with rockets without navigational guidance chips, so it's just fire away)
:: since Israel is powerful in the area, they need to take a stand, before things get worse, and call a gradulal step-down ceasefire on both sides and go to diplomacy immediately.

* the Israeli Air Force is compromised of USA fighter planes (F-15s)

I cant answer for us all as you request but i can say personally i think its a shame that people can't get along. It's a bigger shame that the root of all of this conflict is religion.

I know some of you might come out and say "not its not religious, it's a land issue" and that is partially right, however boil it down to the very bottom of the issue... why is Israel what it is today... because the Jews were given a homeland after WW2. Why are the Palestinians so angry that they are there? To them the Jews are occupying their holy land. Who's holy land is it? Jews, Christians, AND Muslims. There is a religious interest in this land... if there wasn't there wouldn't be such a conflict.

i can only answer for one atheist, myself. like all countries the have a long ways to go if they are ever going to have a lasting peace. i feel the entire world needs to get over it's self and start putting a side all of our petty differences and start working together to solve our worlds major problems instead of waiting for some fairy tale to solve everything.

Due to the fact that they are fighting over land they think is "holy" and many leave the safety of their lives in other countries to go there and live I feel no pity for either side. There is plenty of blame to go around on both sides too. Both are guilty of incrediblely brutal crimes against each other.
