The average among all cancer patients is 6 years until it comes back. That is why most studies of cancer only look at a 5 year picture it makes chemo look good when there are better answers.

Yes.

There are different classifications of remission partial and complete. Complete remission means that there are no signs or symptoms of cancer. This can mean the cancer has been "cured", or cancer may still be present in the body. Complete remission can be temporary or permanent.

Partial remission refers to the point when few signs and symptoms of cancer remain, however there is a noticeable decrease of cancer cells.

If you have any type of cancer and are in remission, you still need to be wary and should see your doctor in whatever time frames he recommends.

Yes

That is why when doctors talk about cancer they use the term remission. There is no actual 'cure' as microscopic cancer cells may remain long after treatment has been stopped, and this may regrow and cause recurrence of cancer.

If you remain in remission >10 years, there is a high likelihood of permanent remission or 'cure'.

Yes, but the longer a body is clear of cancer the more likely is may not come back. Husband had malignant melanoma...he is now 9 years cancer free. At the time they didnt give him much hope, but they say if he passes the 10 years with no probs the less likely it will not...This does not mean It wont.. just means the chances are not as high.

cancer can come back any time it darn well pleases!
you dont say what kind it was. thyroid? breast? ovarian?
be more specific with Q next time. you'll get better answers, there are all kinds of tests, scans etc you can have to rule out recurrence, depending on what type you had in the first place.
diet helps too. stay away from sugars, cancer loves sugars. lycopene is not liked by cancer so eat a mediterranean diet, lots of tomatoes, tomato sauce....red wine

I don't know about 5 years but my grandmother's breast cancer came back 15 years later in breast cancer of the lungs. My father's also came back only 12 years later. For your sake, health and life keep checking up with you doctor and best of luck to you.

Yes. Some cancers have a much greater recurrance rate than others, but regardless of what kind or where it's extremely important to keep getting checked as your doctor suggests.

Yes, I had breast cancer. Dr. was yelling because I had not been checked lately and I said "it has been 5 years so I figured I'm good" (kind of joking around) and he very sternly told me THAT IS NOT TRUE - AND ESPECIALLY WITH BREAST CANCER. I guess certain ones - MAYBE.
