Judges 19:22 certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him. (RAPE HIM)
19:23 And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them,
19:24 Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.
19:25 so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
19:26 Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was light.
19:28 And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an a ss,

19:29 And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.

To me, it seems to be. If you are at someone's house and the mob outside wants to rape you, throw them your girlfriend. After they kill her and leave her on the doorstep, chop her up in the morning and mail her body parts out across the land.

The Context of the story is important.

Several things are going on here:

1: The concubine had mistreated the Levite, by being unfaithful to him. She had then gone back to her father's house. At that point, he would have been within his rights to have killed her.

2: There is the right of Hospitality, which requires that a host protect his guests from harm. Against that, is the fact that the Levite was a stranger to the town. The leaders of a place were expected to investigate who the stranger in the town is --- especially since the person he is staying with was not a native of the place..

3: The Old Man offered what he could, to protect his guest. That offer appears to have been rejected. The offer of the concubine appears to have been accepted.

4: The sons of Belial have a reputation (in the Bible) of only doing evil.

The major theme is that actions do have consequences --- consequences that can affect far more than just the individual. This holds regardless of whether the action done is "good", or "bad".

This story parallels the story of Lot and the angels, with the same breach of manners, by the host, and town residents.

I am not sure. I've always had a problem with Judges. It's all about rape pillage and plunder. Honestly though, this story isn't any weirder than that in Genesis 19.
After much thought, I would think that the moral is; there are plenty of sick and twisted ideas expressed in the Christian Bible. If you are going to base your life upon it, you better be careful. Particularly if you are a woman, or not of the "chosen race".

An anecdote. The master of the house did the right thing. It was very important, above all else, to be kind to visiting guests.

Ah yes, it's a lovely story isn't it? Filled with the loving compassion that is the trademark of christianity.
Now let the apologists start the excuses!

The moral is clear. That a woman's life is somehow less valuable than a mans life. Horrible, but clear.

Your translation is almost what it says. Remember that the book of Judges is the book full of things that you as a Christian are NOT supposed to do.

There is no moral. It's a story about something that happened. I ate breakfast this morning. There's no moral to that either.

I'm a Fundamentalist so it means if your daughter brings a castrated guy to dinner...Dad's gonna make sure he ends up BEING the dinner.

(Now please excuse me...it's time for me to go suck the King's breast.)
