You see the warning on a lot of stuff that uses batteries, but why? What will happen if you do? I don't think it would explode or anything, but I am just curious.

All batteries have an internal electrical resistance. Lower resistance is better. The resistance of an alkaline (non-rechargeable) will increase dramatically as the power is drained. Also, the resistance of most rechargeable batteries will increase after they have been recharged many times.

Normally, when a battery pack is "dead" the batteries have most of their usual positive voltage, but the current output becomes very small.

If you mix fresh and old alkalines, then when the old batts die, the power left in the newer batts will reverse the voltage on the old batt from positive to negative. This will change the chemistry in the old batt and it will eventually leak. It might explode is some circumstances too, but I'm not sure.

The same thing happens with rechargeables, except that leaking is less of a problem than a permanently dead battery, or exploding. I DO know that some rechargeables will explode in extreme reversal situations.

It is likely that your new batteries will run down quicker! It is also dangerous and can cause your batteries to leak!
