It makes sense to me that if you don't believe in Him then you don't hate him b/c you think there's nothing there to hate.

I think some Christians or other theists would argue that every person has an inate ability to recognize that God exists so you are going against this God given ability by denying His existance. In that light, it could be considered hating him b/c you refuse to acknowledge Him just like it would be hating the government by going out of your way to deny that it has any power over you. Does that make sense? I agree about Leprachauns though! Ha!

They need a clear black and white. It's not all Theists that believe as such, just some.

Some people of religion have a very hard time when things aren't defined with a clear black and white. So, they have to generalise everything and place you into a box so they can understand you without thinking.

Their pastor may have said something along those lines too. And you know, the religious right doesn't think for themselves. What preacher daddy says is law.

Good point. How can a group hate something they believe does not exist? They just hate the ones that make them feel inferior for believing different or try to pressure them to believe different.

Just as some vocal and public "Christians" give Christianity a bad name, in the same way some very vocal and public atheists have clearly expressed their hatred for God and for all things religious.

It's an unwillingness to view the world from someone else's perspective. In the ordinary vernacular, it's called stupidity.

The definition of Atheism is not hating God. It is not believing in him.

Theists believe that because at one time when they considered themselves "non-theists" they were doing it because they hated their god. In other words they were trying to convince themselves that they were us but they failed so they think that we can't be for real.
