it's normal - they do it to lean into the scratch. It feels good...it's her way of making sure that you keep doing it. =)

When you pet your cat and she puts her butt up, she wants you to scratch the spot at the very end of her back where it meets the tail. Cats have a special gland there that feels good for them when scratched. Don't worry she's not in heat!

Looks like you've got some great answers. All cats raise their butts when you pet them. It's a sign telling you to "keep it up, I like it".
Hope you didn't think there was something wrong with the cat!!!

It's an automatic response. I think they try to get closer to your hand, like a dog when it leans against your leg when you pet it. For females, their body is programmed to do that in case it is a male trying to mate. Make sure you get her spayed ASAP or you will end up with a howling, pesty, marking kitty every few months!

My cat does the same thing. However it increases when she is in heat. It stimulates them if you ever watch your cat when your rub her back she will probably get little ticks whenever you get close to her tail. It is in her nature though so its nothing to be alarmed of.

Oh, yes, elevator butt! All four of my cats do that as well- it's just a way of showing that they're enjoying being petted, and they'll scratch your face off if you stop. ;)

It's impossible for a cat to reach her own back to scratch it. She wants you to know she enjoys it and wants you to keep doing it.
