As a teacher of 32 years - I would be extremely surprised if this were happening - but if it is, that person needs to be reported to his or her principal immediately. Talk to parents of other students in the class - and the kids as well ( depending on age). Find out if there are witnesses that can back up your child's story. If not - it will be his or her word against the teacher's. Given that situation - the principal will be unable to follow up other than a conversation with the teacher. This might be enough to let the teacher know they are being watched and will prevent it from happening again. Be sure to have all your facts before you approach the principal. Teachers realize that things of this sort can easily get them fired and are very careful to not step over that line - but there are always a few bad apples. Please don't be tempted to take matters into your own hands as some answers suggested. Most states have strict laws and stiff fines for either verbal abuse or physical abuse of ANY school employee. Go through the proper channels in a calm way to get results. Hope this helps.

If I had a good for nothing lazy son or daughter and the teacher was cussing at them because he knew the kid wasn't working up to their potential, or if the kid was making trouble in class...let the cussing begin! That's the trouble with schools and many parents today. Everybody thinks these rotten kids need to be pampered and spoiled. Parents are too quick to judge and they don't even respect the teachers authority. A lot of these workaholic parents don't even know what classes their kids are taking, but will sue the entire school district for allegedly making "Susie" cry. Now, if this was a sweet little perfect child and the teacher was having major PMS and started calling this wonderful angelic child a good for nothing dumb @$$, then the teacher would have a pissed off mama to deal with and would be standing in the unemployment line.

If I witnesses it with my own eyes I would call the teacher on the spot about it, however, if I was told that they were doing this then I would have a child make a tape recording for documentation and call a meeting with administration as well as teacher. This way they can not deny this behavior. People/kids have been known to make-up/misinterpret things unfortuantley ......
I do disagree with other people answersing and beleive that screaming obsenities is a form of abuse.

I'd ask him or her if they deserved it... More than likely, they probably did. But, if I felt that the reprimand was in error, I would go down to the school and ask that teacher why he had done so. If I decided that I did not wish to have the teacher continue administering punishment himself I would ask him (or her) not to and make a report to the administrations of the school.
*Note I said "Make a report", not "File a grievance".

I'd switch my child to a different teacher, and then share some words of my own with this person, that I won't write here...use your imagination, but I would tear the person a new one and then make them explain to my child why they were wrong

I'd have that teacher's teaching license revoked for good but first report him/her to the school principal and bring the social services with you and the police. Teachers of this kind have NO RIGHT being with children let alone teach.

I would emotionally feel like walking into the teachers office and slapping him/ her across the face and calling him/her a Mother F*u*k*r.

But the rational side of me would report him/er as abusive to their principal and demand that it be documented in their file and that your child be removed immediately from their class.

Depends on how old the child is, and whether or not the kid needs to be cussed at.
If my child was too young for it...i would report it to the school....
If my kid was a punk and needed it...i might encourage it...

Let them sort it out between each other.....remember sticks and stones will brake your bones but names will never hurt you. Our techers used to beat the **** out of us, we had christian brothers teching us.....A few harsh words won't harm your young fella in the slightest.
