Someone just proposed this to me, " If there were no God, there would be no atheists". But why are there still atheists that deny it?
Im not being a smart-aleck here or trying to bash people who dont belive, I enjoy a good argument and like to see all opinions. So PLEASE keep the "bashing" down, this includes my fellow Christians. Lets try to be respectful.

That isn't a philosphical question, that's a very poorly put together semanitic argument.
If there were no belief in god, there would only be atheists.

This is not a valid argument. To not believe in something does not prove the existence of that thing. The "something" is a concept until it's existence is able to be proven. For example, I believe in the concept of UFOs but that does not imply that I believe that UFOs exist and it certainly does not mean that because I don't believe they exist that they do. And to your additional point, if the concept of UFOs didn't exist then I can't believe either way in their existence; therefore, if the concept of God didn't exist, there would not be atheists. This is not a case of the chicken and the egg; the concept of God had to be first before atheists came along.
Atheist is just a word to categorize people who believe that God does not exist just like Christians is a word to catergorize people who do (or more precisely subscribe to a specific foundation of beliefs that support God's existence).
I just considered the additional class of Agnostics, as people who would deny that the existence of God can be proven. This is a separate class tho I would consider all atheists as agnostics but would assume that a small subset of people who believe in the existence of God may well believe that his existence can not be proven. That's a slippery slope; most of those people are probably institutionalized :).
Keep on preachin'!

As long as there are theists, there will be atheists. Gods, as a concept, exist. Therefore Atheism exists as a concept.
The philosophical concept you've proposed here is flawed. God has not ever been proved to exist. By the same token, the existence of God has never been disproved. Your question implies that God has indeed been proved to be real, when in fact He has not.
Like Santa, Bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster, which are also unproven concepts, there are people who choose to believe in them with no substantial evidence, and people who choose to disbelieve in them due to the lack of substantial evidence.
If there were irrefutable evidence of the existence of God, atheists would cease to exist. However, the only evidence that God exists is a book that says he does. Atheists require more evidence than the word of someone who wrote about their imaginary friend 6000 years ago.

We exist as "atheists" because people like you exist. Unfortunately the "concept" of a god provokes this occurrence.
Why are adults able to comprehend that Santa and the Tooth Fairy doesn't exist, yet they believe in an "all powerful" loving god who intentionally neglects all living creatures, contrary to his "supposed" role. All this, despite there not being a single, solitary, minuscule, microscopic thread of evidence supporting it's existence. Ever !!
Get a grip.
How convenient that "free will" clause works. Boy, if you add that variable into any equation, all things are possible, no matter how improbable. I like that. Stick with that theory and you'll blind yourself to all possibilities.
Imagine a world free of this asinine belief....Just think of all the lives lost to this friggin nonsense. A "god" would not allow wars to be fought over him/her. If he/she did, they wouldn't be worth worshiping.
On the subject of a god who has never been disproved, I say there is no need to disprove this. If enough people were to say that there are 600 foot tall creatures crawling all over the Earth, someone else would have to disprove this in order for it to be recognized as false? I don't think so.

I think aethiests are just as wrong as the christians/fanatics. Why? because god cannot be proven or disproven, so either side is wrong, neither can prove their being right or wrong and because of that, both are wrong, maybe at the end of the day one will turn out to be right but, as it stands now. NOBODY KNOWS SO STOP TAKING SIDES.
God is an inponderable question, the same as the afterlife, the same as the meaning of life, so why do we dumb humans stick on the darned question? Cant we move on and ask the important questions like "what now?"
Any philosopher who hasnt worked that out, isnt worthy of being a philosopher, they are just asking the same questions as everybody is. Unanswerable ones.

there is no god and there are atheists. theres the flaw in your argument. its completely based on your point of view. everyone is gonna see that differently. i believe that if there was a god, he would make himself obvious enough that everyone would believe in him. christianity depends upon the fact that it seems like there COULD be a god, and no one wants to end up in hell cause they didnt believe.
actually, if you look at the scientific facts you will see that there is a lot more evidence against god than there is for. I believe that if a person who had not been exposed to the idea of god or no god before was told about the two beliefs, he would probably laugh out loud at the religious people. that is assuming that this person was capable of rational thought.

If there were no God would there still be Christians? I think yes because it is a delusion and people are free to believe in all foolish things. take a look at the flat earth people or the witches or the palm readers and psychic hot liners. Superstitions are in every mind out there and a real base for such belief is not required or desired by most of them.
In response to your comment, most of them got it and gave you the right answer, to try to learn how to form a lucid statement or question.

i find it interesting how someone can debate something they do not believe in. I don't believe in Santa but I will not go to the north pole and say see he isn't here see see look it prove Santa is a fake look you believe in something that is made up. Your defending a right to not believe when you know that no one can change your mind. The only reason people are trying to force religion on you is because you come around to debate. If you did not come around people who believe in God then you would not keep coming back. The only way to take this is that since you are coming around those that believe in God is because your asking to be convinced.
Look I respect anyone who firmly believes in something, even if that something I do not believe and I won't follow suit and call you silly names. If your goal is to kill religion well I am sorry to say that's not going to happen.

Look around the world....There is a lot more evidence that there is NO GOD than There is a GOD. If God is a Good and Kind God-What evidence is there? If God provides us with everything we need- How come so many die of hunger in Africa? If God will protect us- Why does he let so many die such terrible deaths.I am an Atheist and I believe there is NO GOD for ANYONE>

Atheism is the believe that there is no god.
The only way for there to be no atheists is for there to be no theists. The idea of god would have to disappear whether he is real or not. he isnt by the way
It doesnt imply anything because you are saying if there was no religion, which there is.

Just because there are atheists doesn't mean there is a God. The logic doesn't work that way. Atheism is just the term assigned to those who don't think there is a god. You can't get rid of religion and faith so there has to be a name for those who choose not to join a church or whatever.
