If you are referring to a window unit type of A/C, the answer is a definite NO. The unit consists of two parts, one of which must be exposed to the outside air. The unit collects hot air from the room and exhausts it to the outside, then blows cold air into the room from that portion of the unit inside the room. That is a very basic, not technical, description of how it works. If you just sit it on a chair, it will still do the same job, but the hot air it collects will just be blown back into the room you're trying to cool. Net result is the room stays hot and your electric bill goes up.

A regular air conditioner needs to be placed in a window where it can vent to the outside. The a/c needs to be able to drain and also release hot air. There are special air conditioners that do not need a window - they are units that sit in the room and you need to just vent a small tube to the outside and change a pan that the water will collect in.

A traditional window air conditioner is designed to remove heat from an enclosed area and exhaust that heat somewhere outside that area. If you have nowhere to exhaust the heat, you will just dump it back into the room you are trying to cool. In fact, you will be adding additional heat from the fan motor.

NO. In order for an air conditioner to work it has to displace heat somewhere, hence the window. If you leave it on a chair, the heat will be displaced in to the room that you are trying to cool, and you risk catching the chair on fire.

No It is a big hazard. They need the outside air to circulate though the ac and cool it to keep it going. It take the hot air from outside and turns it cool though the chemicals in the machine.

air conditioners work by removing heat from air on one side and transfering it to the other thats what it uses freon for it does not work otherwise so it won't work without it being in a window or something .

It needs somewhere to drain, like a window, you can always get a portable a/c that drains into a tray in the bottom of the unit
