Assuming you are on Windows:

Double click on MY Computer
Double click on the iPod
At the top of the screen click "Tools --> Folder Options"
Click on the View Tab
The make sure you select the option to Show hidden files and folders
Hit OK
You will now see the ipod_control folder

*** COPY ALL THE FOLDERS YOU SEE HERE SOMEWHERE ELSE ON YOUR COMPUTER FOR NOW!!!! *****

This is in case things get messed up from this point on. You can always copy them back in and have your iPod back to where you started from.

Now delete the iPod_control folder from your iPod.

Try to synch up and see if everything is all set.

If not, delete ALL folders in the iPod and then synch.

If you end up with a messed up iPod, just copy all the folders from earlier back to the iPod and at least you won;t lose anything you have now.

If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.

1. You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. You should not see any orange. Toggle it on and off to be safe.

2. Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.

iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
3. The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:

iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode.

4. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode.

It's where you move the hold switch back and fourth. Leave the swith to the hold. And press down the menu button.
