The Royal Marines are marines, meaning soldiers from the sea. They were the first true soldiers of this nature, and their original role was, during ship to ship combat, when the opposing ship hove to in preparation for boarding, the marines climbed the rigging to fire down upon the enemy, especially the officers.
When the United States Marine Corps was established on 10 NOV 1775, they were patterned largely after the British Royal Marine Corps, and served basically the same purpose.
There are still a great number similarities between the Royal and US Marines. They both have an eagle, globe and anchor insignia, but the Royal Marines insignia is centered on the British Isles, while the US Marines centers on the United States. The training methods are very similar, and both services still share some traditions.
Other notable Marines include the Royal Dutch Marines, basically a special forces unit, and the former Soviet Spetznaz.

The U.S. Marines at its conception in 1776 were based on the English Royal Marines. Their jobs started much the same, but the modern British Marines are now mostly a Sea borne mechanized assault force of infantry, where the U.S. Marines are a multifunction sea borne fighting force that include Aviation, Armor, Artillery, and Infantry assets.
