the best bait is, of course as with all fishing, for the big sows use live bait... perch blue runners b liners etc. the added benefit is you will also probably catch amberjack and grouper as a side catch, which no boddy complains about.... but for general snapper fishing i use a boston mackeral (sometimes called tinker mackeral or black mackeral) rigged on a three hook leader, like a kingfish leader but made of 130lb mono or flouro, with a 4-8 oz weight above it. i fish the livies the same way, but with a single hook instead of the triple leader. try fishing 30 to 60 ft off bottom, as the larger snapper suspend while the bottom generally consists of the smaller scavenger fish. if your in a pince, snapper do eat anything, so if you cant get the prefered bait, any kind of cut bait, fish or squid will work.

the best way I found to catch a snapper is to go fishing for a catfish. That is when I catch a lot of turtles.

Try using some of the same bait as you would for a catfish like liver, stink bait, all those yucky smelly ones.
