Humans domesticated the dog to serve us, either to protect the home or cattle, to be lap pets, for many, many uses. We have bred certain traits into them.

Cats however started hanging around human settlements where grain was stored because of the high concentration of rodents in this area. Humans learned that having a cat in the house was a good way to keep their homes rat-free.

Humans have done nothing throughout history to change a cat's natural behavior...cats just did their thing and humans made sure to take care of them.

There is no difference in the intelligence of these animals, humans have just had different uses for them.

And by the way, you can train cats how to do tricks. My parents' cats know how to sit, lay down, and know a few other "tricks" given through voice commands.

I don't think they are smarter, I think they think differently. Dogs are pack animals and if they think you are ahead of them in the pack, they will follow instructions from you.
Cats are solitary and do what they darn well please. I think the cats may be smarter because they get humans to do eveything for them on the off chance that the cat will deem you worthy enough to receive affection from the cat.

Who says dogs are smarter than cats? I have trained all three of my cats to use the litter box, follow me where ever I go, respond to their names, ride safely in the car, and meow on cue. My friends could not train their idiot Chihuahuas to use the puppy pads.

i am not convinced that dogs are smarter then cats, they are of different species and they are intelligent in there own way that we are not yet able to fully understand.

I always thought cats were smarter, they know that if they start all that obey crap, they'll be expected to keep it up.
