because dogs are very terretorial. if someone walks by their house or knocks on their door, they will think that you are an intruder.

I think its a dog's natural instinct to bark at something or someone when he decides to get all protective and as the others mention territorial.

They don't always. But most dogs are watch dogs, and they bark to (a) alert the pack (family) that there is something of interest to come look at, or (b) alert the intruder that they are on guard and this is their territory.

I figure they're just guarding their territory. There are a few dogs that do that where I live- though they don't bark at me much because they know I live there too.

Exactly, its a territorial thing. People and dogs that they don't know they will bark at. If they do know them, it will be a different kind of bark.

actually it depends...
many species, because we like certain type of dogs and to keep to have the same type of dogs, have been bred soo many times through inbreeding, consequently they have become stupid, so chances are certain type of dogs are actually stupid and bark for nothing.
But then again, certain dogs are more territoral and defend their space.
you might look carefully at your or the dog's "personality"...it may tell you more as to why it's barking...

It is a dog's nature to protect its home and master. The dogs are giving a warning that you may be trespassing - even if it's just passing by.
