The other answers (thus far) are a bit misleading. The 60% they are referring to is the number that are overweight OR obese (there's a difference).

Only 30% of Americans are obese as defined by the BMI (body mass index) chart.

At most recent survey 127 Million American adults, or 64.5% were overweight, 30.5% were obese and 4.7% being severely obese.

Obesity is defined by the Body Mass Index (BMI) which is calculated "by dividing a person's body weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared." A BMI of 25 is considered overweight, 30 obese and 35 severely obese.

i've heard it is 62% if you mean north america
