The answer from Dragonsarefree2 is your best bet. I don't think people from other areas of the country realize how different New England is from other areas. The spay/ neuter rate is much higher in this area. While there are still pets in shelters and rescues, they do tend to be breeds with stigmas, behavior issues or seniors. I still think they are deserving of good homes but it does become more difficult to place these animals with special needs and concerns and not every person who wants a dog meets the requirements or are able to provide homes for these animals. I have seen a lot of rescue groups who work with "high kill" shelters in other areas that actually import dogs to New England. Some of the sites and rescues that Dragonsarefree2 listed have "imports" available. Due to transportation, medical, and fostering costs they usually have a higher adoption fee then the local pound but still a lot less than a "puppy-mill" dog store pet or a pure bred from a breeder. Happy searching, I'm sure you will find a wonderful friend.

How refreshing to hear someone say, "I would prefer an older dog rather than a puppy". I commend you. Puppies are the first to be adopted while wonderful animals are put to death just because they're not little anymore.
Check your local phone book under animal shelters or humane societies. If no luck there, call your local dog warden and find out where they send the unwanted animals they pick up. Good luck!

Hi, I'm a volunteer for Connecticut Greyhound Adoption and we have lots of dogs currently available. Most dogs coming off the tracks are between 2-5 years old, I think currently we have a couple of older dogs in foster care. Our website is http://www.ctgreyhounds.com

you can find a shelter or a rescue if you'd lke a particular breed. Just make sure the kind of dog you want is the kind thats right for you. Theres a huge difference!!!! I'm a volunteer for a Doberman rescue in PA. you can type Animal rescue-ct i n your search engine and that should pull up a few in your area. Yahoo also has a breed recommender in their pet section that will be ver helpful...I suggest using it before you get a dog to make sure you get the kind best suited for your home, lifestyle and energy level. I applaud you for wanting an older dog...they are very hard to place in homes.... If you'd like help the1mom1997@yahoo.com...just email me...

Contact a shelter or go online and look for rescue groups. Usually rescue groups go by the breed. There are millions of dogs out there waiting for someone like you to give them a second chance. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i.e. Lab rescue, greyhound rescue, irish setter rescue, etc.. Or Humane Society, Animal control

definitely find a shelter... you can find an adult dog who is already house-trained.... the shelter folks will let you intereact with the dogs so you can find one that is friendly. Good luck...happy hunting.... you'll be doing a good thing by giving a homeless dog a home.

Are there no shelters near you? Those dogs are dying for a home.
