Well a response to these peoples answers on here - Just because you don't have money to pay for gas to go in a SUV does not mean I don't and certainly does not mean I am idiotic! I'm the smart one it seems, since I CAN afford gas to go in a SUV and obviously by your answer you can not scum bag!

There are a plethora of sensibile choices out there depending on your own personal tastes. American or foreign? Auto transmission or manual? five-seater or seven? Towing important? Here's some advice.
#1: AVOID a "traditional" mid-size or full-size SUV (such as Ford Explorer or Expedition, Jeep Grand Cherokee or Commander, Chevy Trailblazer or Tahoe, and so on.) Simply put, unless you absolutely need the space, they can no longer be justified in a world where $75 or more for a barrel of crude will be the norm. Most Americans (not all) do not need the space.
#2: What to buy? I would strongly consider a mid-size or compact "crossover" SUV, which is one based on a car platform. Tops on my list are the following:
- Saturn VUE "Redline" (250hp Honda V6, 20/28 EPA MPG, fast, sporty, priced about $23-25k for a 2WD version)
- Regular Saturn VUE (fuel efficient GM 4 cylinder and V6 options, new hybrid version about to come out, no haggle pricing)
- Ford Escape (starts under $20,000 for a 4 cylinder, hybird version very fuel efficient, Ford is always discounting as well)
- Dodge Caliber (perhaps a little on the too small side, but real cheap, can get a fully loaded one for under $20,000 with AWD.)
- Honda CR-V (as fuel efficient as Saturn VUE, should be discounting 2006 models since it's being redesigned for 2007.)
- Last resort - if you need more space, then consider a 2007 Tahoe, since it is the most fuel efficient full-size SUV out there (17/22 EPA rating) Hope this helps..

I agree with LEECEE, Jeep is the ultimate SUV. My wife has a Grand Cherokee Limited AWD V8 4x4. Very comfortable, very fast, bad on gas. I would rather have comfort than gas mileage. If gas mileage is a problem go with a Grand Cherokee Laredo V6 2WD. If you need more room and good gas mileage, this would be the best option. Only downside is resale value. It is hard to find someone who wants a 2 wheel-drive Jeep. You can go with 4WD, it will just kill your mileage.
As far as a hybrid goes, if you have looked at the price of ethanol lately it is higher than regular octane gas. This trend will continue. Farming corn is more expensive now, so the price of corn will go up, so the price of ethanol will go right up with gas. It is a viscious cycle.
I used to sell cars, so if you want to ask any further questions you can email me at rmcopeland@email2me.net
Good Luck

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!
I asked a similar question and I too got the same about the gas, I was like OBVIOUSLY I KNOW that a Bigger vehicle=MORE GAS EXPENSE! But you crack me up, anyhow I guess I will now go read the responses since I am shopping as well (my second is on the way) And congrats to you!
FYI the SAFEST which I know you really weren't asking about but is my main concern since SUV's have high roll over rates, is the ford explorer, Just to let you know :-)

You don't need an SUV. You just need to better maximize your space, and stop being such a gas-hog. It's people like you, who think they "need more space", who are killing the world.
Unless you have like 10 kids, keep your car.
And if you DO have 10 kids... you're already polluting the world enough. You should send them to work in the salt mines or something useful.

I would recommend a hybrid. It is a little pricey, but in the end you save $$ b/c of gas, plus you may be able to get a credit on your taxes. For more info, check out IRS.gov, or check with your tax preparer.
