Not at all. Women are generally paid less because they are told their whole lives to Expect less, and that's what they bargain for when they interview. Also, from a socioligical standpoint, women who qualify for those types of positions are less often the sole breadwinners of the family, and less driven to aim for a high salary.

Actually in a "male dominated" society, the female is looked upon as being a House Wife and that is her role, as a nurturer.
It wasnt until WWII that they had to go out into the work place and "earn a living" because all the men were at the "front" getting shot at...
When they came back, the women didnt want to go back to being house wives and nurturers again, they wanted to earn the money! So, that started the complications of women in the Work Place.
Now, Employers give the women lower salaries in order to "cut the bottom line" as they "know" that women will work for less, (though, they dont want to, but there is still that descriminatin factor, of wages between the sexes), and they hire them for jobs that are not as "manual labor" intensive, or that which is not intended for "brute strenght" work.
Of course, those women showing the capabilities are paid the same wages, if they are able to do the "brute strenght work"...but you will find most wont.
And your "buying girls", was an amusing thing...
Real sexist there bud!! I can see your going to be another "bad factor" in the hiring of women and not giving them a fair and equal amount...
If it wasnt for women now, most business would FOLD UP!! They are the ones that keep a lof of things going...
(Find me a good secretary, and I will show you the person who is 'REALLY' in charge of the business!!!)..

As an employer, you want the highest productivity and efficiency from your employees. Not necessarily because you are greedy, but because you are in business to make a profit. When hiring employees you should look at their background, their personality, their pay history and consider their longevity with the organization. I read an interesting novel called "Women don't ask." This book looks at why women do seem to get paid less... the answer comes down to, women just don't ask for it. We are trained while we grow not to be pushy and argumentative. We are raised to be kind and considerate, etc. In several studies performed by the writers of this book, they "interviewed" men and women with the same qualifications and experience for the same jobs. Over all, when offered the job, men were more likely to negotiate a higher starting salary. Most of the women accepted the salary without negotiating. Over time, the men made far more than the women because raises are based on current salary. The men started with higher salaries, so their raises were larger. Women seem to negotiate far less than men. An organization that wants to limit discrimination cases will make sure that the demographic of its employees is a fair representation of gender and race.

this is my royal take on it..... now there is a saying that this is "a man's world"...now i don't really believe that, but , i think that a woman may make less money and may be SEEN or VIEWED as less efficient because a woman may have more reasons and situations that may cause her to be absent in the workplace, especially those that have kids. lets face it... the only way you can be efficient is to actually show up for work (a first step). so i think that could be why women (mainly single women with kids) make less money because employers will not pay top dollar for someone to constantly call in sick or be absent from work. but since it is against the law to discriminate, this is not something that an employer is going to find out until AFTER the hire takes place.

WOMEN (not girls, give us a little bit more credit in the workplace) get paid less because of people like you. Men try to make a fast buck, hire the more efficient woman and pay her less than the less efficient man. Women also get paid less because many (not all, many) men are sexists and believe that women don't do good work, which would be incorrect.
Men and women should be paid equal amounts for equal work and equal efficiency in said work.

To sigmastar_62: Men pay for women? I pay for guys very often. With many of my boyfriends (including my current, to some extent) I pay for them when going out. The parents usually foot the bill for marriage, the bride pays for her $5000 dress and you pay for a $200 tux rental. You pay for prostitutes because you are hiring them for their services, the same way you'd hire a gardener or a painter for their services. Before posting a reply to a question, try to make a valid point.... or at least stop making such idiotic statements.

There is no question of being less efficient just because you are a girl. Normally I find girls more concerned, honest and efficient towards their job. They seldom give you chance to get angry on them. Sorry, but this is not the same with male employees. There is a technique to handle girl employees and if you master it you have got the best of all work force. Note it down and you will remember me some time in future. Yes it is their bad luck that are paid less.

Since you are coming from the perspective that the objective is more valuable than the subjective, of course TO YOU the woman's 'way' would be seen as 'less efficient.' BUT imo, it takes an integration of both styles -- rational objectivity and subjective communion-- to be the most KICK *** and successful person you can be -- in every area of your life, but especially in the business world, where this integration is not seen nearly as much as it needs to be.
You are coming from the opposite view that you see women coming from...but your side of the gender 'gap' is every bit as incapicitating as hers is. You just can't see the 'shadow' of your own side. You see hers instead. In order to integrate the two (and lose the shadow of your own), this is what you can do. Find the shadow in your own one sided perspective and find the POSITIVE in hers -- in a business sense. In other words find the ways that her subjective interrelatedness aids in her 'success' -- and try using some of these positives in your own routine. By being conscious of and utilizing the 'female' positive expression, you will push out your male shadow side. This is simple psychology, but trust me IT WORKS. If you do this you will succeed as few CAN. And you will be a much better man for it too. A REAL Man!! (because of your wholeness which 99.9% of men nor women have!!)

I think there are a few issues but mostly it comes to bias, as well as women's reluctance to negotiate. I think reluctance to negotiate when starting a new position is a big reason why they make less.
I agree that social bonding/competition issues with other women can come up and interfere with productivity, but women can in other circumstances bond better or be better managers than men, that is harder to quantify.
Another issue is that women have less role models in the business world and are less likely to undergo the effort required in order to be someone high up in the chain. It often requries a lot of personal sacrifice, and they'd rather put that effort into their family. Men find it more of a societally accepted role to put a lot more of their personal time into work, as it is a reflection of themself as a man. Women feel their mothering skills are more often a reflection of themselves as a woman and they don't want to be perceived as bad mothers.
