Consciousness is the universal energy force that connects each of us to each other. We are under the illusion that we are all separate. Not so. We are all connected by a collective consciousness. We have individual consciousness, but they we are part of the collective as well.

Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated! :)

There are different kinds, or degrees, of consciousness. You can't compare the consciousness of a human, a dog, a cell, a protein, and an atom, but they all have consciousness in some form.

Why does water always act the same? Consciousness. Water "knows" how to act, all the time, because of the actions of the atoms and molecules that make up water. Their individual consciousness is combined to produce the effect of wetness.

There is a basic consciousness in everything, and that consciousness is expressed through the physical body it occupies, whether it's water or a fly or an old man.

Consciousness is life.

There is also "self-consciousness", which is the kind expressed through humans, and a higher consciousness--enlightenment--expressed through only a few (but that number is increasing).

(This is one definition. Like all words, "consciousness" has other definitions for other uses.)

Consciousness is a quality of the mind generally regarded to comprise qualities such as subjectivity, self-awareness, sentience, sapience, and the ability to perceive the relationship between oneself and one's environment. It is a subject of much research in philosophy of mind, psychology, neurology, and cognitive science.
