usually backpacks are not needed for pre-school, but i got my son one anyway. let her try them on to make sure it's not too bulky or hangs too low. i got my son a batman one for about $10 at target. among the items on my sons list were crayons, play-doh, learning to write paper, blunt tiped scissors, etc. check with her school/teacher for a list of school supplies. my son didn't use his backpack that much so he will be using it this year for kindergarten. don't stress, it's fun. my mom called it the back to school holiday. have fun with it now because in a few years she'll want to pick it all out herself. then in the higher grades all you get to buy are notebooks and folders and other boring stuff.

Gymboree is where I got them for my sons. But Lands End and LL Bean also have them for little ones.

And by the way, who are you trying to impress? Your three year old hasn't the faintest idea that she needs the "right" backpack. RELAX.

Call her preschool and find out what supplies are helpful to them. Our preschool sent home a list:

Change of clothes, labelled with name
2 boxes of kleenex
Nap cover (small blanket or a towel to cover up with)

Don't send a bunch of junk that they don't want or need!

Land's End makes a pre-k bag. It looked just like a regular bag, but is specifically make for little ones. I would ask the school what would be appropriate to bring to school, but my daughter's Kindergarten list is:

2 #2 pencils
1 folder
1 pink eraser
1 pencil sharpener with lid
1 box of wipes
1 box of tissues
1 towel - for nap
1 composition notebook

Backpacks are usually too big for the little ones so our school uses canvas bags with handles for Pre-K and K students. Big enough to put full sheets of paper but easy for the kids to carry. Each child can decorate them as they choose.
