God did build this country and blessed it many times over. Yours is a good question and I am not an athiest so I can't answer for any of that group but I can say that "its not the government that is trying to take God and religion out of everything" It is some of the people, using our government to their own beliefs, but I already know, that will never happen and God will always be with us! Be at peace and know that God will be with us always.

I am not offended by God.
But why, when I go to court, should I swear on a Bible, if it is meaningless to me? Why then, should I be forced to look at the Ten Commandments when at Court? Why does the bush administration give more money to Christian organizations, and less to other religious affiliations?? IS this fair??????
What you fail to realize is that this country may have been founded under principals of religion, but there is supposed to be a separation of church and state. And there is no separation when the Govt allows one religion to be above others. Your religion is no more true than any other.

Religion is used by government to forward their own agendas - nothing to do with God.
The two should be separate. Are religious people the only ones that count or should have a say. I think not. What religion does the government use as the standard? The one that suits them the most?

Because when a govt endorses a religion it can lead to abuses...also, the religion the govt is endorsing is Christianity..I'm sure many here are OK with that...but what if the govt endorsed Judaism or Hinduism only...some Christians might have a problem with that...there is something called separation of church and state - and good reasons for it. Freedom of religion is the reason many people originally came to this country...do you know why Rhode Island came to be? Because Roger Williams and company was kicked out of the Massachusetts Bay Colony for wanting a separation between church and state...do you think Catholics would have been welcome there? No, they had to go to Maryland...this is what occurred when govt endorsed religion....atheists make a big deal out of it but I think it is because other groups don't want to be victimized by the majority...and in these days of mass hysteria and bigotry who can blame them...Personally I don't worry about religion not being in govt...I worry if god isn't my heart
BTW, the "godless" state of Rhode Island was the first state in North America to pass a law outlawing slavery in 1652...I guess separation of church and state didn't hurt their morals eh?

I think cHristianity was the prevelant religion at the time this country and its ideals was formed. Things have changed---the ideals have not--the population of this country today is comprised of many different religion who believe in many a diverse god. They all have the same rights under our constitution and the very ideals that put god and country together has created the current delemma of whose god-with everbody having the same inalienable rights. But what does that have to do with an oxymoron--meaning two words that go together and have opposite meaning--ie jumbo shrimp, military intelligence, go ahead back up, ect

Because the original American Constitution and Bill of Rights called for a complete separation of church and state. It is not a matter of atheists and their non-belief, it's a matter of which god or gods, pick one and trouble comes after. Originally this country was settled by people trying to avoid religious persecution in their own countries. The Founding Fathers took religion OUT of government to ensure that this country never persecuted a person either for his religion of lack thereof.

"science built this country, not religion " RFLMAO.
Have you no knowledge of history. America was founded on religious freedom, to get away from Englands religious restriction. Geez, guy.
Love the question by the way, how can an atheist be offended by a God he does not believe in!

Sorry to burst your bubble but the founding fathers were VERY specific about keeping religon and state seperate.
Some examples for you;
“In every country and in every age the priest [any and every clergyman] has been hostile to liberty; he is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.”
Thomas Jefferson
“There are in this country, as in all others, a certain proportion of restless and turbulent spirits - poor, unoccupied, ambitious - who must always have something to quarrel about with their neighbors. These people are the authors of religious revivals.”
John Q Adams
“The most detestable wickedness, the most horrid cruelties, and the greatest miseries that have afflicted the human race have had their origin in this thing called revelation, or revealed religion. It has been the most destructive to the peace of man since man began to exist. Among the most detestable villains in history, you could not find one worse than Moses, who gave an order to butcher the boys, to massacre the mothers and then rape the daughters. One of the most horrible atrocities found in the literature of any nation. I would not dishonor my Creator's name by attaching it to this filthy book.”
Thomas Payne talking about the bible.
So understand that religion is a force that holds people BACK from advancing. And if religion had been a concern for our founding fathers, the United States would never have been founded.

If 'this country' is the USA, then you show how little you know of it.
The sweat of Chinese, Africans and Irish built your country. Two of them have no Christian religion in their native history, while the predominant Irish religion, Catholicism, was abused for centuries in the USA. So, what was your question again?
Oh, and you clearly don't know what an oxymoron is either.

The government represents the state. Our country was founded on the separation of church and state, so that its citizens would not be required to have any one particular belief.
I look around and religion is certainly not out of "everything." But it certainly should not be in anything supported by my tax dollars.
p.s. not an atheist
