Avast antivirus or AVG. I used Avast when I reloaded my sister's OS.

Ad-Aware SE
Spybot Search and Destroy
ZeroSpyware LE
Google Toolbar, or Yahoo Toolbar (I use Google since it has a spell checker, but Yahoo works great too. Just don't try to use both.)
Hijack This! (it will detect BHOs when nothing else will)
ZoneAlarm firewall.

Go to http://komando.com/downloads/categories.aspx?cat=Security

This site contains a list and links to free anti-viruses, free firewalls and free anti-spyware.

Note: Use only ONE anti-virus; use only ONE fire wall (I f you use more than one anti-virus, they will conflict with each other. The same is true for firewalls. Also, don't bother using Wondows XP built-in firewall--it is a joke. But you can [and should] use several antti-spyware programs.).

Spybot and Ad-aware are excellent sptware removal programs.

All of the programs listed at the Kim Komando site are first rate. Check it out.
