ok- here is what I told my boyfriend. He speaks mainly spanish. Watch sesamie street and other american cartoons made for very young children. Read childrens books in English. They will teach you slowly. Hang out with English speakers. Frequent places where English speakers are and listen to their conversations. Get an on-line study disk to practice, and mainly**use every english word you know every chance you can. **Do not speak in your own language unless you have to, and ask lots of questions. Do not be afraid to make mistakes or sound stupid. This will only hinder you. Get a good english dictionary which translates into your language. Preferrably a pocket dictionary that you can take with you. Use it when you forget a word. Just say "How do you say" and point to the word in the dictionary. Say it five times so you will remember it. Do not be too proud to admit you don't know something. If you are self-conscious of errors, you will never learn another language.

A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of online courses which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

My friend from Japan learned it quickly using the following methods:
She studied it in Japan.
She came to America and hung out with me and the children I taught....(the key for you-surround yourself with ENglish-speaking folks, if possible).
She took an English course from Berlitz language school.
Watched CNN and World News a LOT. She used to like Peter Jennings, because he had no detectable accent.
She watched VH-1 a lot.
One day, we were listening to the radio, and a Rolling Stones song came on. My friend looked surprised and started telling me what Jagger was saying.."If you start me up..."
I told her, congrats! If you understand Mick Jagger in a song, you've nailed the language!
