I would suggest going to the library or pet store and taking a look at a book of dog breeds, there are lots out there.
If you want a loving dog, yet one that is still active, please check a humane society or shelter. They often have young dogs there, despite popular belief, and I also find that as most of them used to have human attention and it has now been taken away, they crave it. They always seem much more eager to please and greatful to have a nice home, whereas a puppy from a store or breeder might not. Also, shelters often have mix breed dogs as well, which can be just as great a pet as a purebred, sometimes even better if you're looking for fairly contrasting traits, such as active but not hyper.

How about a greyhound. They are not as active as people think. In the house they are big old couch potatoes. Very calm dogs. They do need exercise and love to run, but don;t need to do it more than any other dog (according to my vet). Check out some of the retired racing dogs. They only race them till about 4 years old. So many they can't find homes for end up getting put to sleep.

Go to your local animal shelter and tell the staff there what sort of dog you are looking for. The staff of the shelters know the dogs very well and can recommend one or two who would be a good fit for you. They can bring the dogs out to meet you and you can choose which one you click with the best. At our shelter, all the dog's cages have signs on them that say things like 'Couch Potato' or "Go-Getter" or "Genius" that describes the dogs' personalities so people can make the best choice.

I would suggest my dog a Bouvier De Flanders, he is very loving and loyal, I take him with me just about everywhere. He is a large breed, weights 80#, and needs groomed at least 4 times a year.
He loves to play, but is very calm, good with kids and other dogs, he even likes cats :)

I would recommend a dachshund, mine is 1/2 chihuahua-she's tiny & very loyal, she goes just about everywhere she can with me. I'm lucky enough to be able to bring her to work with me.They are very smart dogs too & easy to take care of.They are happy as long as you are happy.

Golden Retrievers are very loveable, however they are hyper. Labs are another good choice.
