what i need to know is a)a medium sized linux o\s 2)and which one i should download,and once download how should i burn it to disc
the only burning software i use is nero dvd\cd and it hasnt got a bootable cd option
im ok until i need to burn the data and thats were the problem is,so what really need is a linux program which can be burned straight to cd-r
any ideas

download Linux Fedora Core 4 or 5 they should burn to CD-r just fine i have a copy of both, and both of mine work.

these do take some time to download - took me 2 days to download both over at school.

Mandriva is good for Linux newbies, very easy to configure and update. You need to download the .ISO file. Nero will open these. And ISO is a disc image, so imagine it's a "picture" of ALL data on the disc (including the boot sector). Don't worry about making the disc bootable, Nero will sort all that itself with an ISO. If you want very small system, download the Damn Small Linux - 50MB.

Larger - 1CD - Ubuntu or Kubuntu
(the best choice if you have a good connection to the internet)

As far as the CD burning is concerned - you need to find the option "Burn Image" or "Burn ISO" or smth similar in the program you use for burning, and not to burn the .iso you've downloaded as a normal file.

Suse 10.1 is probably as good a distro you could get for someone new to linux, the web site will give details on how to burn the ISO file.
