Just because someone has an accident does not mean they don't want their child.
Abortion has been around for a while - legally and illegally. The great minds that were born would have been born anyway because their mothers still choose not to abort them in a legal way or illegal way.
If you seriously think that making abortion illegal is going to stop men and women from getting abortions, you don't get the world you are living in.
Abortion does not only get rid of accidents. People use abortion for a variety of uses. For example, some people just keep aborting until they get the desired sex. Others have to in order to remain a citizen with full rights in their overpopulated country. If they choose to keep the kid -which many do - they can lose being recognized as a citizen, get their kid taken away from them, forced sterilization, and other consequences.
I don't think abortion is right, but there's more to it than you think. If we attack the reasons why people get abortions, the abortion rate would be greatly reduced if not elimanted completely.
But for now societies all around the world are dealing with poverty and starvation, pedophilia and child slavery, incest, rape, HIV/AIDS, little or no healthcare, a change in a lack of morals, and a lack of support for mothers and their children. There are women that actually say to themselves that they don’t want to have a kid brought up in these conditions. They don’t want to give birth to a kid that has no chance in life. Eliminate all of these conditions and there would be no abortion because there would be no reason to.
But just taking abortion out the picture without addressing the reasons why it’s even considered an option is irresponsible and a gross misuse of power. Abortion is a symptom of a messed up society, so now we have to fix what’s causing it.

Whatever number you come up with, it will pale in comparison to the number of murdering bastards that would have been raised in a home where they were not wanted. You might as well ask how many great minds are prevented by condoms, or abstenance for that matter. Hell, the way you talk we should have no reproductive constraints at all! If we have a billion babies this year there will be a greater number of genuises in the world!

This is a little loaded, if you don't mind me saying. The sentiment is fine, but the argument cannot possible be simplified in terms of, How many great minds have been lost to abortion? The truth is that it's impossible to say, but for the question to have any value we need also to ask, How many great minds have we sent to die in war? How many great minds have been lost in motoring accidents? How many have been lost to famine? The number lost to abortion, if it's quantifiable at all (and I doubt it is) has to be a shadow of these. And finally, would it not also be worth asking, How many great minds have we lost to murder by people who were the unwanted, unloved offspring of unprepared parents, and who grew up bitter and resentful to everyone else because of their own horrible upbringings? We'll never know, but it's as valid as your own question.

I think abortion should be illegal in all cases EXCEPT when the mothers life is in danger. From the moment of conception you have life inside of you. Granted it may be very immature life - but life nonetheless.

I dunno. Im wondering how many of our greatest minds were the results of gang rape. Or incest. Or HIV infested monsters. Or, how many of our greatest minds caused the death of their mothers from complications of pregnancy (obviously none, or they'd have not been born...)
Abortion isnt ONLY for unwanted pregnancy. I think using abortion for birth control is abhorrent. But I think outlawing something when there can be extenuating circumstances is ridiculous.

Einstein and Beethoven were both accidents. I hope no one aborted the child who had the ability to find the cure for cancer.
