Your dog is going to have the personality you raise it with. Some parts can be taught, and others he/she'll learn by watching you. If you're laid back and relaxed, so will your dog (When it becomes an adult, puppies are all full of energy). If you're excited all the time, so will your dog. What's probably more important are practical considerations. Do you want a dog for protection? Then you should find a larger breed. Just a companion, and you live in the city? A medium size or smaller dog might be easier to take care of (and clean up after). If you live in a colder climate, or hotter climate, remember to find a dog that's dressed appropriately. A husky will never be comfortable in Arizona, and a greyhound will always be cold in Michigan. Most important though, is that you're going to love the dog best if you choose it. I'd recommend going to the humane society, or kennel of your choosing, and take home the puppy that you like best for it's personality. Good luck!

There are many, but be aware they are mostly for fun and do not really tell you what dog would be best for you.

Best to do internet research, buy a book, or go to some dog shows.

Yahoo Pets is a great place to start. This link takes you to the place where you can answer some questions and they will suggest dogs based on which ones best meet your requirements.
I used it and loved it!

Gluck!
