The What? Oh, you mean the essence of a person's being. That develops as a child becomes an adult from what they learn as they go through life, both through education and their life experiences.

You are mired in causality. You believe that A comes before B and that reality is bound to a universal clock somewhere that flows in only one direction. Now, here's a reality check for you: You cannot have a causal system generated by an external causal system. What this means is that there is a "singularity" cutoff between any two universes, such that the causal progression that resulted in a singularity cannot _continue to affect it_ - in that way, a universe can contain another universe, though it can not interact with it. This is why time stops as you approach a black hole. So, how does this relate to your question? It's obvious, isn't it? If one causal system can exist within another causal system, entirely, and the two cannot interact - then that requires that the sum of all transactions and happenings within one causal system OCCURED upon its inception, and abide unchanging as a result (a static transform series like a cartoonists flipbook, regulated in pages the length and breadth of Planck's constants). You wont have two simultaneous "timelines" happening. One universe (including time/space and all other spatial dimensions) is Entirely contained within another, meaning it's beginning (Big Bang/what have you) and it's end. So, we've shown that time is only causal for those residing in a given singularity/universe. My suggestion is that the whole works is artificial, that there is an a-causal existence upon which everything observable and hypothesized is predicated. It is in this no-time dimension that I believe the soul exists. As to what point it develops? I think if you sign up to play the game, you are IN the game. If your mother aborts you, you get no points and you are back in the Game Lounge, waiting for another go.

In fetal development, the soul is reckoned to develop at the same time as the neural network which is about 16 weeks. This is also when babies start to kick and this time is also referred to as a "quickening".

I don't think there is a soul until the baby is born and takes it's first breath. Before than it's a part of the mother. It does not do anything for itself. It does not breath, eat, or even make it's own blood. It's like another organ or something until it's born and takes on a mind of it's own. I'm a mother and I love my baby very much. I don't feel she had a soul until she took her first breath.
