"No! " - He will back off
"Naughty Boy !" - He will show me his sad face.
" Why Baby? " - He will meow back as if there is something to complain.
" Where is Mama's darling?" - He will his back on the floor and stretch himself, waiting for me to rub his tummy.. : )
These are just the few.....

Both of my cats understand and respond many things.
They come when I call their names. They also understand when I say "time to go to bed", and they go to the bedroom and jump up on the bed. If I ask if they want food, they meow at me in response and run to the kitchen.
Both cats were grown when I adopted them. I just started talking to them like I would a child, and they responded.

"Get the puppy" One of my cats knows this means that it's playtime and to go chase the dog.
Alternatively, the dog also understands "Get the kitty".
This is what we do in my house when the cable goes out. It's actually funnier than most things on tv anyway =p

My cat knows that when I tell him to be a good boy that it means I am leaving the house.(work, shopping, etc.) If it is only for a short time,(run to get a snack or pick up something quick) I actually tell him I will be right back. At home if I ask him if he is my good boy, he knows that means I will pet him if he climbs up on me.

Cats don't understand English or any other spoken language for that matter.
The only things cats care about is when you're going to feed them next.
Cats suck, get a dog.

Cats understand everything humans say, they just choose to ignore most of it.

All animals respond to tone not language.
STOP is said harshly works as well as LOVE said harshly to stop a cat from doing something wrong.
There usual response is to run away, depending on their history with you and your previous responses when speaking harshly.
Good Luck.

Most of my cats know their names and when i call them they usually come once they have finished doing whatever has their attention. one of my females, a calico/siamese loves to play fetch and i gave her a teeny tiny rubber duck off of a key chain and i would throw it and she would fetch it. anyway i hadn't seen her "duck duck" in some days and i said, "Cali, where is your duck duck?" off she went and 15 seconds later she dropped her duck duck in my lap. i was blown away! she had actually understood me and what i had said, or at least the duck duck part. This is a cat that taught herself to pee on the tiolet with no provocation from me. i happened to hear the sound of someone peeing in the bathroom one day at as i was the only human home at the time i looked in the bathroom and there she was straddling the toilet seat peeing! Her sister who does not live with us does the same thing. Cats are amazing creatures it only takes them one or two times to catch on to something, like it only took one time for me to let one of them drink out of the bathroom faucet for hem all to be sitting in the bathroom meowing for me to turn the tap on. They are very compassionate, intelligent creatures and i love being owned by them.

When I tell my cats Charlie and Callie that I love them, I know they understand, because they look up at me with this...look...in their eyes. They're such wonderful pets. I love my cats! <3
