The book of Mormon was written by some guy from New York that wanted to start his own religion separate from Christianity. Christians generally don't accept teachings from another religion that is contrary to their own.

A slight clarification might help. Mormons (they prefer Latter Day Saints) accept the Bible in as far as it is correctly translated, this is where Joseph Smiths translation of the KJ version of the Bible comes into play - as it is that translation of the Bible they accept.
Mormons/LDS also place the Book of Mormon above/on top of the Bible (look at any advertisement they publish) other Christian groups put the Bible above the writings of their group. i.e. the Lutheran Book of Concord is viewed in light and study of the Bible and where there is a difference the Bible wins. In the LDS tradition the Bk of Mormon would win.
As a side note JSmith translated the Golden Tables with "special glasses" that only worked for him and no one else, if this really happened it is a departure from the way God has presented his words to man in the past. Yes God used dreams, etc but there were always - always - others that could also understand them and present them to the people. Not true with JSmith.
While I could use a lot more space on the Bible topic there are a vast number of other concerns as well, such as Lucifer (Satan) and Jesus being brothers, and the council of gods that Satan and Jesus present their plans of salvation. Jesus’ plan (free agency) being accepted over Lucifer’s plan.
Another problem is the statement attributed to Brigham Young (not a direct quote, please forgive me on that) As we are, god was. As god is, we can/may become. (my incomplete notes show I took this from Millenial Star Vol. 54)
Then there is the subject of preexistence (some nonchristian traditions believe this as well) this is idea that we are alive before we come down to earth in human form through our birth and then work on our levels of godhood from here on this plant.
Which reminds me of this: (also not a direct quote - sorry) The Father, Adam (a god) came from Kolab to Earth with one of his wives (Eve) to populate the planet.
This concept means there was no fall (that we are not sinful by nature).
Later the Father, Adam god, came back to earth and had sexual relations with the virgin Mary to give Jesus a physical body.
This denies the virgin birth and conception by Holy Spirit.
Let's have Mr. Smith and Mr. Young summarize for us...
“In the beginning the head of the GOD'S called a council of the GOD'S and they came together and concocted a plan to create the world and the people in it.” (Joseph Smith, The Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6)
“When our father Adam came into the Garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body and brought Eve, one of his celestial wives, with him... He is our father and our GOD and the ONLY GOD with whom we have to do.” (Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 1, Pg. 50)
Well that is all the time I have at the moment, hope it was somewhat helpful.
After posting this I realized that Bible fact had these as well - please accept my apology for misquoting.
“God was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens.” (Joseph Smith, Times and Seasons, Aug. 1, 1844)
As man is, God once was. As God is, man may become.” (Lorenzo Snow, Millenial Star, Vol. 54)

Some people use Revelation 22:18 and 19 to say people aren't allowed to add to the Bible, forgetting that Deuteronomy says the same thing in Chapter 4 verse 2. If you are to believe both verses, then we as Christians would be placed in a very bad state since everything added after Deuteronomy 4 would be considered as forbidden, and we should all be Jews still, by that line of reasoning.
"Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it...."
Rev. 22:18,19:
"For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
"And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book."
To quote Mormon Jeff Lindsay: "In those verses, John, who is in exile on the Isle of Patmos, is obviously referring to the text before him - the Book of Revelation and its prophecies, its descriptions of plagues, its discussion of the holy city, etc. - and urges no one to change what he has written. The Bible as a collection of canonized books did not exist when he wrote those lines. In fact, several non-LDS authorities believe that Revelation was not the last book of the Bible to be written, but may have preceded other writings of John himself by a couple of years. Nevertheless, what John wrote is true: no man should change what God has spoken. However, God has the authority to speak what and when He wants. God spoke to other prophets after Moses (the injunction against men adding to the word in Deut. 4:2 not being applicable to the case of God adding to His words), and many of their divinely commissioned writings have been preserved in the Bible." I wonder if the people who are afraid to read the Book of Mormon are afraid to read a book their cousin received in another state. The reason there are two books of scripture we use is because we believe there were prophets in the Old World and the New World prior to the coming of Jesus Christ and afterwards. I think there are some religious leaders who are worried that their authority might be undermined if people start reading the Book of Mormon. I knew a leader (will not say which denomination) who told all his congregation not to even talk to Mormon missionaries. Some churches don't believe God would appear to someone new, young, and uneducated as Joseph Smith to give him information as important as the Book of Mormon. Some very strange stories have also been circulated about Joseph Smith since he was a teenager, which people also would rather believe than studying on their own to see what the Book of Mormon is all about. And yet other people hear strange stories about polygamy in early Church history and dismiss every thing related to the Church because of that, although the practice of polygamy was ended in 1890, approximately 25 years after the end of the Civil War. I think if people who are educated in Jewish culture and history read the Book of Mormon, they pick up on Jewish characteristics right away, but not all Christians have studied that much yet. Hope this answers your questions.

Aren't the Mormons supposed to be Christians ? Did you know the Utah state bird is the seagull ! I'm not one, but for the most part, their intentions are good. I got stranded in Salt Lake city for awhile and did lots of research, got socially pissed on! During the winter Olympics, they stashed all the homeless, and when it was over, rounded them all up to jail ! bigots !

Because they see differences between the two books that make them believe they were not from the same source.
