The pilot had to take care of himself because manytimes it was a long flight to his destination. The helmet protected his head incase air turbulence caused him to be thrown about in his seat. It is also the reason they wore jackets and gloves.

So someone would ask this question EVERY WEEK rather then read the old resolved questions.
Don't forget to also ask why aren't planes made out of the same material as black boxes.I haven't seen that asked in at least 2 days!

If they hit turbulence they might hit their head and get knocked out before they can crash into their targets. Plus the helmets are stylish; if your gonna go, you might as well go lookin' good.

How do you know if they did? they knew the mission, didnt need radio contact and are strapped into the airplane so they wouldn't hit their heads anyway.

In case they get shot down before they crash, they still might survive to try again another day. I don't know. :)
