Well, I am typing this answer as I work in a tiny installation in the middle of the desert (its 2000 hrs and still over 100 degrees) in Kuwait and I am on my 22nd year in the service (Army). I joined when I was 18 to get money for college and get out of my home town (pop. 3,600). Did three years enlisted, had a blast, went to college, started ROTC and the rest is history. What did I get (am still getting) out of it? Well, I have literally "seen" the world, far east, middle east, Europe, all points in between the west coast and east coast of the USA. I have ridden on everything from giant cargo planes to tiny helicopters flying "NAP" of the earth. I have driven tanks, road trains, piloted boats, been on ships and drove every imagineable truck we have. I have shot an RPG, watched missles fire at ballistic areial targets, and fired miultiple caliber weapons (at targets). I have represented the USA with members of the ministry of defense in Hungary, and Moscow, I have been to schools for logistics, leadership and tactics. I have more close friends then a guy could ask for, and am considered a good friend to them. I have shown my children the world, made love to my one and only wife in multiple different countries (all places extremely romantic!), but best all, I found out (and at times still discovering) who I am- as a person, as a man, as a husband, as a warrior, as a patriot, as a giver of aid, a learner of history, a member of the human race, and most important- as a dad whose legacy will be left in my children. Eventually this incredible adventure will end (maybe 3-5 years and then it will be time to retire), but the military also taught me:
that another one will begin.

A little over 3 years, spend half of the time in Iraq. I realized that the military was not for me, mostly because I didn't agree how things were ran. As for experience alot I suppose, I'm not sure how most of it pertains to the civilian world but none the less I got experience doing all types of stuff.

I was USCG for four years....
then I had break in service and went back in for another 6 years.
I liked it.
Just like anyplace else.
Got good days and bad days.
But you gotta do stuff you might not be in mood for.
Aboard USCGC DAUNTLESS....underway over the Holidays.....
Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New years.
Did Haitian Migration Interdiction and Drug interdiction down there.
Some stations I was watchstander...and that is all I did.
Did not have to make morning muster or any of that stuff.
I just stood radio watches...
12 hours on 12 off 12 on 56 hours off.
then 12 hours on 12 hours off followed by 72 hours off.
Depends on what branch you are in and what the task of particular unit is.

15 years from '79 ~ '94 with the Corps of Engineers. I entered as a young man with little direction in life and decided to make the most of the opportunities I was presented with as well as life lessons. Among those was discipline, maturity, responsibility and character.
I saw a great deal of the world as well as the USA. We constructed everything from roads to hospitals to latrines. We fought alongside men & women in Panama to Iraq and saw a lot of terrible things, but also many wonderful things.
Finally, I was fortunate to have the GI bill to pay for my schooling. Every solider has the opportunity, it's up them to take it a make the most of it.

I lasted about 3 months in the cadets. There were to many stupid people there and I decided my time and energy could be well spent elsewhere.
