The trouble with labels is that what you mean by your own label can always be interpreted as something entirely different by someone else. If I say I'm an atheist, other people will substitute "evil baby-eating monster" in their minds (or some such thing). Also, a huge variety of people call themselves by the same label. If someone else calls themselves a Christian, I'm not to know whether they're a decent and reasonably rational person who approves of gay marriage and accepts evolution and a 4-billion-year-old Earth, or a deeply immoral and irrational "God Hates Fags" type who thinks our planet was created 6,000 years ago and the first people were Adam and Eve (for example). There's just too much variation for labels to ever be very reliable. That's why we should all (including myself) try not to generalise too much, and discuss ideas and beliefs rather than judging the people who hold them without fully understanding them.

There is no such thing a better labeling system incapable of offending. Labeling systems stem from human need to identify someone impersonally - distancing themselves from that particular person or persons. Labeling systems started quite innocently (ie toddler, teenagers, ect.) but it has been carried too far. The need to categorize every little nuance has become quite preposterous and therefore more likely to offend.

No one wants to be labeled Jim, I'm sure you wouldn't like it if someone who doesn't even know you labeled you.

nah, some people just don't want to be labeled. I don't care personally. A label doesn't change who or what I am to myself and those who love me. Don't sweat it bud.

Why do we label? It does not matter what you call someone or a group of people someone will be upset. Humans must gripe about something to stay happy.

I don't want to be labeled. I am too sporadic to be pinned down by a label.

There are two kinds of people on this earth... those who attach labels to others, and those who don't.
