I'm so sorry for your loss! I had to say good bye to my cat after 16 years with her. I know just how horrible it can be. Time helps. Don't let anyone tell you to "get over it, it was just a dog". It wasn't just a dog, it was your friend.
The best therapy is adopting a new friend. Not a replacement, they can't be replaced, but another to love.
Get a puppy. No one can be sad around a puppy. They keep you to busy to be sad, and you have to laugh at the little guys.
Start volunteering at a shelter, or somewhere. That is a good way to honor your dog, and you keep busy. For me it helped to keep busy and be around people.
I also made a little scrapbook of all the fun and funny things my kitty liked to do. All of her little quirks and silliness. Remembering the good times helped. Also, remembering that our pets hate when we are sad, for any reason. For me being happy was a way of honoring her life and "job" as my companion.
Again I am so sorry for your loss.

It is a long, slow process... and it's a bit different for everyone. It has been years since I lost my best dog ever, and I still cry once in a while. What I always remember is that I'll see her again someday. That's what gets me by.
Everyone is different, and it might not be the best thing for you, but I usually get a new puppy rather quickly after I have to let one go. I'm not replacing my other dog, just adding to the family. And it helps with the healing process to have another wiggly, furry little puppy chasing me around the house, nipping at my toes and keeping me busy. It's good to laugh. It makes wounds bearable.
Best wishes to you in whatever you choose to do.
Edit: Well, great! Congratulations! Believe it or not, Brody will help you get through this.

Hi, I have had animal companions all my life and believe me when I say, I completely understand what it's like to lose one, and I know what an how you're feeling. The grieving process is different with different people, so take your time. Weather a pet is lost, or passes away, the feeling of loss is still the same. There is a wonderful and very supportive Yahoo! group called Rainbow Bridge. Check them out. I wish you comfort.

Try to get your mind on something else. If that doesn't work, talk to your friends and family. Or to a doctor. I had to give my cat away 1 year ago because I was really allergic. I had him for about 5 years. I had the same experience. You'll probably get over it in a month.

It sounds harsh and you may feel like a traitor to the memory of your dog but a puppy sounds just right for you. I know you are afraid of the pain of losing another dog and feel it is not fair to your dog but don't you think your dog would have wanted you to be happy? Go for it, you will not be sorry you did. Good luck.

Your dog's fine. It might be a considerable time before you get to see him again, but you will eventually. Just find another dog you can share your grief with. I'm sure your dog is irreplaceable but I think he/she would want you to share some of your affection to some of the other dogs out there living a miserable, caged existence.

we always miss a lost pet. dont expect the new one to "fill his shoes" or you will not like the new brody. enjoy the new dog for who HE is, and slowly the pain will be replaced with the new joy. it will be slow. and thats ok. be sad when your sad. it just means you know how to love a pet.

this is terrible bu tperhaps it is time to get a new companion. You can't bring the other doggie back but you can make a new friend. I have lost animals before and usually 3 months is what it takes before I can commiitt to a new one..........good luck I know it hurts.

Be thankful for the time you had with your former dog, and decide that you are going to love the new one just as much. Your new dog deserves to be loved as much and form a good relationship with you too.
