Could more good be done by, say, selling a jewel encrusted crown and feeding someone with it?

Most of the treasures of the Vatican are ones that were created by artists in order to express different truths about religion using art. As far as the Pope having many possetions, they are all gifts. Manufacturors of everything, from cloths to shoes frequently give the Pope gifts, which I'm sure are often given away in turn by the Vatican. The Pope himself has very little money or possetions to himself, and lives in a small apartment in the Vatican. The entire Vatican is supported by the contributions that Catholics make once per year.

As far as feeding the poor, the Catholic Church does more to help the impoverished than any other organization on the planet. In cases of natural disasters such as the Tsuamis in Sri Lanka, the Church has contributed more than the US government. In an earthquake in Iran several years ago, Pope John Paul II himself sent a donation of his personal money to aid in the relief effort.

Just because the Church has many beautiful works of art created by histories greatest artists as a symbol of their belief, does not mean that the Church doesn't help people all over the world. Its leaders live simply, and the Church as provided more help to mankind over the years than any other group.

Not my decision but He does sleep 5 whole hours and shouldn't he stay awake all that time and pray? And He has far too much free time if he can sleep that much. I mean why should he be so pampered. By the way the luxuries are historical antiques and most were donated not bought.

Yeah im am catholic by birth and in my opinion the whole church thing is crap. They have all these poverty level people donating they little money they have in the name of god and for what, so the preist, pastor, reverend or what ever can drive a benz and have a fat house. GOD does not need money and no one should have to feel that they need to pay to be one with god. As a matter of fact it shouldnt be that you even need to go to church. If we are all gods children then we all can speak to him where ever we are.

The Catholic Church is not now, nor has it been, the form of church that Jesus Christ designed in the New Testament. In fact, it's one of the largest corporations in the world.

Yes, I agree with you. But then if they didn't have all that money, how could they pay the damages from all the sexual molestation cases that have been brought on its priests~

i know that it is supposed to be the riches of heaven reflected in this manner but i like the quote from "Joan of Arc" better.

Cardinal: Are'nt you dressed a little manly for a woman?!

Joan: Aren't you dressed rather fine for a man sworn to poverty?
