Let me see… if I’m lower middle class and make $30,000 a year and give 10% to a church or ministry of some sort, that’s… HOLY MACKEREL… $3000 in a YEAR!

That’s got to be at least ONE-THIRD more than what someone spends on one carton of cigarettes every week for a year! Or ONE-THIRD more than what someone might spend on a six-pack of beer every day for a year!!!!! UN-STINKIN-BELIEVABLE!! (Gosh! I sure hope that person isn’t buying a carton of cigs AND those sixers of beer in the same week… that would really screw up the numbers!)

What if someone got their nails done AND went to the movies once a week for a year?? Or what if someone bought a new CD AND bought a new X-Box game every week for a year????

Tithes, in my eyes, are 1. what God wants us to do, and 2. a way to show how much faith you have towards God. If you choose not to give b/c you think money is tight, that kind of shows the lack of faith that God will get you through a hard time.

The church has to cut its costs. Some of these mega-churches have $60, 000 dollar phone bills. Who are these people calling?

You don't need 6 pastors all making 60-100 grand.

Giving is an act of worship, not waste

I'm not really sure that there is a real question hear, but I go to a church that only asks for you to make an offering o f what you can afford. Not a percentage of what you make. I think telling someone how much they HAVE to give is wrong.

In the LDS church, we have a lay ministry so none of our tithes go toward paying for preaching. Instead it goes many other things that are useful to many other people. I'm happy to pay my tithes. What good would a year of movies do me???

We don't have to tithe but we gotta give away money, some people in Acts even gave away their WHOLE house for the poor. but since its hard w/o an shower and fresh food and water (back then they had public bathhouses) people dont do that anymore (in general)

If a person budgets and eliminates some items, 10 percent isn't a lot.

Tithe as much as you want. Don't bother me one bit.

How much of that $3,000 goes toward ACTUALLY helping the poor?

I'll bet my last dollar that a good 75% goes into your pastor's pocket.

Like I said, tithe as much as you want.
Stupid is as stupid does.

The problem is not with the tither. It is a problem with the concept of tithing.

Burning the money would be a better sacrifice.
