I was told that Bluefish is good

It depends on what you are using it for:

Blue fish is somewhat close. It grills very nice. It bakes well, but can get oily (as can salmon) Atlantic Char is almost exactly the same thing. (It may be the same, I am not sure). For baking or grilling, go with Blue

I think the only other fish that is as versatile as salmon is tuna or Mahi Mahi. Salmon has no equal in sushi, except maybe yellowfin tuna (specifically yellowfin)

For poaching or creaming, I would go with Mahi or Red snapper. I would also go with Red Snapper for Stuffing

If roasting whole, I would go with Bass if you can get it.

I'm a little confused because in season salmon can be pretty cheap. If you want a substitute for canned salmon I would guess canned tuna or even canned chicken. While tuna and salmon are pretty similar (recipe wise) tuna is much more expensive here in Ohio so it's not a cheap alternative. Strangely enough chicken breasts can be substituted for salmon if price is the issue. If you still want it to be fish about the cheapest fish I know of is frozen pollock.
