No you dont need a crate. An old laundry basket with an old cover works just as well. As soon as your puppy learns to tell you when it has to potty it can sleep in your bed with you. My two month old puppy does!

I plan on letting my dog sleep with me at night as well but it is a good idea to have a crate and train the dog to like it for several reasons. First for in the car. A dog should not ride in the car outside of a crate in my opinion. That's from personal experience when one of my friends had taken her puppy out of the crate in a parking lot and just as they were about to park somebody slammed into the side of her truck. The poor puppy flew into the stick shift and although not injured she had a sore neck for a day or so. The other reason is for when company that may be allergic or afraid of dogs comes by you can have a nice place to leave your dog where he can't get into mischief. The best way to train a dog to like their crate is to feed them in there and it might be a nice habit to get into. My folks feed their dogs in their crates on the shows and it makes things a lot easier in the RV. Best of luck with the new puppy!!!

Yes you should buy it a crate to teach it respect and discipline. A crate for a puppy is likes its safe place. You should never let a puppy sleep with you b/c now your puppy has gained the advantage to dominance. When the puppy gets older, it will think that it is the dominant dog and walk all over you. Trust me, you should really crate your puppy. All animals need to know that their owners are the dominant and they are below us.

I'm also a firm believer in crates. I read somewhere on the net that dogs like the idea of being in a crate as it reverts back to wolves being in a den. It's a safe and secure place for them. My puppy wasn't crazy about it at first but now he takes his toys and chewies in there and will go in to play with them or chew. If I have to pop out for a while I can just put him in there and not have to worry. I plan on going to a cottage next week and will take it as the place will be strange to him and there'll be a lot of people there so it'll be a lot better for both of us. Good Luck.

You don't *have to* have one, but I sure like them for my dogs when I have to be away from home for a few hours. It keeps them safe and unable to reach anything harmful or cause any damage. I also find that it is easier to house-train them if they are crate-trained.
I started using crates about 6 years ago, and I have never regretted it. It makes things so much better for them and for me. They love their crates, and ask to go in them for quiet time away from the other dogs and the kids. And I don't have to lay awake at night wondering what they might be chewing on... *heh*
There are a lot of good articles about crate-training. I'm not a surfer myself, but someone will be along with a link...
Best of luck!

A crate is useful for when you go to work/school, or even just out for an hour. It keeps your puppy safe until he learns some manners, like prevents him from chewing up your furniture, peeing on the carpet, or playing with electrical cords...etc.
Just peace of mind for you that he'll be OK while you're out. Plus puppies like crates, it's like their own bed they can hang out in for security when they feel like it.

Unless you want to wake up to puppy poops on your pillow (a true story--happened to a friend of mine), get a crate. It will save you money in the end (in carpet cleaners, laundry detergent, and replacements for all the items he chews up while you're not looking).
Your puppy does not need to sleep with you. Maybe once he's older and can control his potty behavior better, and you've trained him to get off your bed on command, he can sleep in your bed. For now: no.

dogs LOVE crates...they are like a den, a place where he can go and feel safe and comfy. this is why dogs like to lay under things, desks, coffee tables, couches, beds...etc. it will be HIS place his safe haven...just get him one.
be careful if you are getting a small breed. sometimes in your sleep you might accidentally roll over onto your pup and suffocate him. (my best friend accidentally did this, she was horrified about it and it took her 2 yrs. to get over it and get a new puppy. she CRATED the new dog at night).
also...puppies have weak bladders....kinda like a new born baby, so be careful and make sure you take the pup out frequently. you could wake up in a puddle!

This crate training thing is fairly new. Frankly I'm old school and wouldn't waste my money. My puppies always slept with me and they were just fine!
